I know it is a growing trend lately to have a feather tattoo- i’ve seen so many on Tumblr, real life, etc etc. Okay they are pretty, for the most part- kind of cliche at this point, and getting to be a bit boring IMO but that isn’t the point- but there is one thing I do not understand…
They are supposed to represent freedom right? Feathers, the ability to fly away like a bird- yes? Beautiful, symbolic, wonderful!
Except 99.9% of these tattoos have feathers that have the little frayed- you know, they have the little “V” shaped divots. Now I am sure that this is for esthetic effect/makes it more definable that it is, indeed, a feather.
My problem is that a feather that is frayed is unusable, damaged, and if a bird’s feather was to fray like that it wouldNo Longer Be Able To Fly.That is why when you find a whole feather on the ground, untouched, perfect, it is kind of a bitch to make it have that “beautiful” look. They kind of stick together.
So basically all these people are walking around with symbolic/freedom/flight feather tattoos and yet what they are representing is imagery of something broken, unusable, forsaken, tattered, forgotten, etc.
Sooo that is something I really don’t understand. Unless people ARE going for the more morbid side of the feather tattoo? Maybe I’ve been mistaken all along.
